Asbestos in the mail

Some Australian companies, organisations, and local councils now offer asbestos testing kits.As part of the process, customers post these kits to a central laboratory for testing. It’s up to the customer to package the asbestos sample, sometimes using pre-supplied packaging.POAAL raised this issue with Australia Post, asking if this is an Australia Post-sanctioned service. POAAL is concerned that these items pose a risk to Licensees and everyone involved in handling the mail.Asbestos is classified as a Class 9 Hazardous product, which means it cannot be sent in the mail.Australia Post advised POAAL that kits that are to be tested for asbestos are deemed to be asbestos, and as such should be treated via the legislated dangerous goods process.Australia Post is following up with the organisations POAAL has identified so far, and will inform them that they must immediately cease using the mail to carry asbestos samples. Australia Post will then monitor the network to make sure that those organisations have followed through. It is reckless for these organisations to put everyone involved in the postal network - Licensees, Contractors, PDOs, and other corporate employees - at risk of exposure to asbestos.POAAL will maintain its vigilance to protect its members.
