Australia Post’s Michael Keen joins us to discuss note counting machines and detecting counterfeit notes.

The Minister for Communications hasn’t opposed Australia Post’s proposed increase to the basic postage rate.

The BPR will increase from $1 to $1.10 from 2 January 2020. Christmas stamps will remain at 65c and Concession Stamps will stay at 60c.

There will also be changes to business letter prices from January.

Incoming Australia Post Chairman Lucio Di Bartolomeo

Incoming Australia Post Chairman Lucio Di Bartolomeo

The Federal Government has appointed Mr Lucio Di Bartolomeo as the Chair of the Australia Post Board for a term of three years.

Mr Di Bartolomeo is currently the Chair of Australian Naval Infrastructure, Northwest Rapid Transit, and Health Infrastructure NSW. He is also a non-executive Director of the Moorebank Intermodal Company, AustralianSuper, Frontier Advisors and The New Daily.

Prior to taking on non-executive director roles, Mr Di Bartolomeo was the Managing Director of ADI Limited (now Thales Australia) and Managing Director of FreightCorp.

Mr Di Bartolomeo’s appointment commences on 22 November 2019.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has decided to not object to a proposed increase in the Basic Postage Rate from $1.00 to $1.10.

The letters service must be self-funding, and not subsidised by revenues from other parts of Australia Post’s business.

In the absence of volume growth it is difficult for Australia Post not to seek price increases to offset its growing costs. Other national postal operators have taken different routes to reduce delivery costs, however some of those strategies aren’t available to Australia Post.

Concession stamps will continue to be priced at 60 cents, and seasonal greeting card stamps will remain at 65 cents.

It is anticipated that the new pricing will come into effect from 2 January 2020.
