About POAAL 2000 National Conference
POAAL’s National Conference, held to celebrate its 60th Anniversary, was held at Penrith, NSW in May 2000.
The Conference was opened by the National Chairman, who dedicated the Conference to the memory of James (Jim) Hampson, formerly of Delegate LPO. Jim, who had lost his battle with ill-health only a fortnight before the Conference, had attended every POAAL National Conference since their inception. His loyalty, good humour and gentleness will be missed by all his colleagues.
Guest Speakers
Shane Morris, Australia Post’s Manager Retail Channel Strategy, presented the topic “netPOS – Linking the Internet to the Postal Counter”. The presentation gave delegates a view of Australia Post’s plans for the electronic point-of-sale network.
ACCC Commissioner John Martin gave a presentation on “Enforcing the Franchising Code of Conduct”. John’s presentation highlighted the impact of the Franchising Code of Conduct on Australia Post and LPOs. POAAL was an original contributor when the Code was being developed, and has continued to liaise closely with the ACCC since the Code’s introduction. The Code of Conduct has been a useful addition to the protection of the LPO Agreement.
Ken Barrett, Australia Post’s National Delivery Manager, gave an interesting presentation to Licensees and Mail Contractors on “FuturePost and Delivery Address Databases”. Ken’s presentation highlighted many aspects of mail delivery and gave delegates an insight into FuturePost.
Solicitor Graeme Halperin gave a spell-binding presentation on Capital Gains Tax. For those who were considering selling their LPO, Graeme’s address was of great interest.
Site Visit
Two busloads of delegates visited the new Strathfield mail facility. POAAL is grateful to Australia Post NSW for opening the facility to us. The high-tech equipment and operations are a huge change from the old ways of handling mail.
Workshops
One of the workshops at the 2000 Conference focused on GST. Jeff Wilson and Graeme O’Brien from Australia Post hosted the workshop and there were questions a-plenty!
Exhibitors
As always there were many exhibitors displaying their goods and services. Sprintpak had a presence in the Exhibition, and Dowd had all the latest uniforms on display. The Department of Transport and Regional Development had a stand where they gave information to Licensees regarding Rural Transaction Centres.
Dinner
And to top off the occasion, there was the Conference Dinner. The 60th Anniversary Dinner was a wonderful evening, crowned by the cutting of the 60th birthday cake!
