Disasters can strike at any time.  Help us to build up this worthy Fund to assist our members in trouble in the future.

History of the POAAL Benevolent Fund

In 2009, Australia was struck by a number of natural disasters, including the devastating Victorian bushfires and extensive flooding in Queensland and Northern NSW.

The impact of these disasters on our members and their communities led to calls by Licensees, Contractors and the POAAL Board to cancel the 2009 National Conference and spend the funds in more practical ways to help those in need.

POAAL was overwhelmed by the response from Licensees and Mail Contractors who were distressed at the plight of their colleagues affected by natural disaster.  POAAL received phone calls from members in all parts of Australia, offering whatever assistance they could give.

Inspired by this spirit shown by our members, POAAL decided to set up a Fund to help Licensees and Contractors in times of severe financial hardship. The Fund was kick-started by the funds from members and POAAL which would have been spent on the 2009 National Conference.

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, officially launched the POAAL Benevolent Fund at a function in Melbourne on Good Friday, 10 April 2009.

POAAL acknowledges the kind assistance of the Grand Hyatt Melbourne in the foundation of the POAAL Benevolent Fund.
